Poetry Portfolio Project

Edgar Allen Poe once described poetry as "the rhythmical creation of beauty." When you write a poem, you express an image or idea in a special way that focuses on form, feeling, and sound. A poem requires far fewer words than a short story or a novel, yet its impact on readers can be just as great.

Your assignment is to put together a poetry portfolio consisting of four original poems written by you.

You may choose from the different types of poems we have studied:

Narrative Poetry

Haiku Poetry

Senryu Poetry

Rhythm and Rhyming Poetry

Concrete Poetry

Sonnet Poetry

Free Style

Villanelle

Up to 3 of the poems in your portfolio can be poetry you have already handed in to me for a grade. At least 1 poem must be something I have not seen yet. Your portfolio must have a cover that includes your name, the date the assignment is due, the class it is due for and your teacher’s name: Mrs. Mantineo. Your portfolio must include a table of contents with page numbers. Each poem must appear on a visually decorated letter sized paper and include a separate typed 1 paragraph explanation/ analysis directly after the poem in MLA format answering the following questions:

What is your poem about?

What inspired you to write this poem?

What style of poem that we studied does this poem fit into and how?

Why did you choose this style?

What are your favorite parts of the poem?

How are the visual decorations you chose for this poem related to the content?

The organization of your portfolio should be as follows:
