Description
At WHS, each 7th grader is given the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument for several weeks during the school year.  Music class is held during 4th period, and students will attend music class for 5-6 weeks instead of their regularly scheduled gym class.  Letters will be sent home with students approximately 1 week before their scheduled music cycle.

Students are currently working on the first page of their Full Band packets, which includes whole notes and whole rests (quarter for percussion) and Concert B-flat, C, and Concert D pitches.
 
 
Students can practice on mouthpieces and by looking over their music and exercises at home.

Students are currently working on producing whole, half, and quarter note rhythms with proper articulation (tonguing) on their instruments.  Percussionists are working to recognize the white and black keys on the piano and playing using proper mallet technique.
 
All students have learned and performed 3 pitches, Concert B-flat, C, and D.  They are learning songs with these pitches from pages 6, 7, and 8 of their music packets currently.
 
Students should review rhythms, breathing, note names, rhythms, articulation with their mouthpieces, and fingerings of notes at home daily.

Students have learned the first 3 notes on their instrument, including fingerings and can practice/review their fingerings and note names at home.  They are working on the first 3 pages of their music packet, which includes songs with whole, half, quarter notes and rests.  Students should practice rhythms on their mouthpieces/clapping their hands, and they can practice fingerings as well.
 
This cycle of band will end Thursday, March 10th.
 
7th grade students do not take instruments home, but have the opportunity to join band in 8th grade so they can become a more proficient performer.

The next cycle of 7th grade music class will begin Monday, January 25th.  Students are assigned music from their gym class.
 
Students will need a pencil, folder for music and other materials given to them for the next 5-6 weeks.

Students have learned two new pitches this week, Concert E-flat and Concert F.  They should be working on pages 8 and 9 of their packet at home this week.  Instruments are available to them during lunch and after school, if they'd prefer to practice with the instrument.  On Tuesday 1/12, they will begin working on music with repeat signs and fermatas, incorporating the new notes they learned last week.
 
Their last 5 days of music class will be January 12-19th.

Students have worked through page 8, Down by the Station and should continue to practice on their mouthpieces at home.  They can work on rhythm, air/breath support, and fingerings for the music from #1-18 in their packets.

Students are currently working on learning their first 3 notes.  At home, they should practice mouthpiece rhythms from their Rhythm Studies Packet.  Bass and Percussionists can work on counting the rhythms or practice stickings/fingerings as well.
 
In the Full Band Packet, students should currently be working on reading the notes and memorizing fingerings on exercises 1-13.  These exercises include whole and half notes and rests.

Student instrument assignments were given today.  All students should have their mouthpiece (if they play a wind instrument).  All paperwork for class should be kept in a folder with a pencil.  Students should have a music writing packet, rhythm studies, performance packet, and how to assemble care for your instrument worksheet.

7th Grade Music Cycle 2 began on Friday, November 20th and will run through January 19th.
 
Students are currently learning treble and bass clef staff/pitch as well as how to produce sound on woodwind, brass, percussion, and string instruments.  Instrument assignments will take place after Thanksgiving and students will begin learning to play the instrument selected for them.

Tuesday, 11/17 is the final day of the 1st 7th grade music cycle.  Students have learned how to play music with whole, half, quarter notes and rests, using the pitches Concert B-flat, C, and D.
 
The 2nd cycle of 7th grade music class will begin Friday, 11/20 and students will be pulled from Ms. Roder's and Mr. Hard's PE classes.  These students will bring home a notice on Tuesday, 11/17.

Students are working on half and whole note/rest songs at this time.  They should practice rhythms at home on their mouthpiece and fingerings on items such as a pencil.
 
This cycle will end after 4 more classes.

Students will be finishing up this cycle of music class and return to gym in the next 2 weeks.   At home, they can work on fingerings/sticking of songs on pages 6 & 7, as well as mouthpiece rhythms. 
 
They are playing music with 3 pitches, using whole, half, and quarter notes & rests.

Students should have completed Unit 2, Lessons 6, 7, and 8 in class on Wednesday, 10/14.  Any unfinished work should be completed and brought to our next class on Monday, 10/19.  
 
Students are currently working on 4/4 time signatures, counting rhythms with whole, half, quarter notes and rests as well as recognizing note names in the treble and bass clefs.
