The Weehawken High School musical theater class will produce one musical over the course of the school year. In this class, students will learn skills associated with musical theatre in our school productions and complete projects that provide academic reinforcement to develop those skills.

Students began Unit 8 on May 23rd and it will last through Friday, June 3. In this unit, students are learning all 15 major keys including the Order of Sharps and Order of Flats in Key Signatures. They are also learning about ascending and descending Chromatic Scales and Melodic and Harmonic Intervals.
In class on Wednesday, 6/1, students will start learning the Circle of 5ths which makes memorizing key signatures less difficult.
On Thursday, 6/2, we will review for the Unit test, which will be taken on Friday, 6/3.
Classwork for 5/24 includes Lessons 31 and 32 and Activities 1, 2, and 3.

Students are currently working on Unit 7, which covers Tetrachords, Major Scales, and the Keys of C, F, B-flat, G, and D Major. Review will be held on Wednesday 5/18 and the Unit Test will be Thursday 5/19.
All classwork is due for a grade by 5/19.

Students are finishing up Unit 6, including The White and Black Keys on the Piano, Flats, Sharps, and Natural Signs, Whole/Half Steps, and Enharmonic Notes. The Unit 6 Test will be held either May 3 or 4.

Students are currently working on Unit 4, which includes different ways to rewrite music with various repeat signs, and eighth note/rest rhythms. They are learning to count rhythms with eighth notes/rests in class as well as notate them on a staff. A formal assessment will take place before Spring Break (Wednesday, 3/23).

We will be starting Unit 3 of Music Theory, which includes reading Treble and Bass Clef pitch in various meters. Students are assigned classwork daily and should complete any unfinished classwork at home before each unit test.

Students are currently working on their own personal design of set/props, costumes, light and sound for The Little Mermaid musical. They will be handing in their work on Monday, 11/30/15. Any work that is not completed in class should be completed at home.

Students are currently working on a personal design project. They have created their own "musical theater" production and are working in class to write a plot synopsis, build characters, costume, set, light, and sound design. Students will work to build a project that shows their plans for designing their show.

Students should be finalizing their Musical Production Design Project for Thursday's class. The final product will include a visual presentation packet that should show the following:
-Plot Synopsis/Genre of Show and what audience it will target
-Characters/Casting for show/Personalities of Characters
-Set and Prop Designs
-Costume Design
-Technical Design including Light and Sound
This project will count as two project/test grades and count as the students' quarterly assessment.

Students are conducting individual research on the following in class:
1) Select 1 musical from each of the following time periods & Compare/Contrast to the Beggar's Opera: 1885-1910, 1940's-1960's, and an original from the 21st century
2) Focus on the following key elements: Music (lyrics, instrumentation); Message (underlying theme); "Physical" Production (scenery, props, technical, etc.); The "Who" and "Where" (audience type, location, etc.)
Research time will be given in class and a written report will follow along with a presentation to the class of your findings.
