Description
The Weehawken High School Band program is comprised of 9th-12th grade students who perform on wind and percussion instruments as well as electric bass.  Ensemble opportunities include but are not limited to Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Chamber Ensembles.  The Weehawken High School Marching Band is one of the most visible groups in the Weehawken Community.  They perform annually at all football games, 8-10 US Bands competitions, as well as parades in the area throughout the year.  For more information, please contact the Director of Bands, Natalie Kerr.

Students are currently working in class on the following:
 
Concert F, B-flat, E-flat, and A-flat major scales.  We will be learning about relative minor scales this week as well.
 
Sight-reading process, how to break down time and work on rhythm, fingerings, key signatures, etc.
 
Fantasmic and The Incredibles--how to count and play eighth note triplets and quarter note triplets as well as syncopated compound rhythms.
 
Competition MB auditions will be held 6/13-6/16 after school. Students can sign-up for an audition slot at:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090D45A4A62EA5F49-2016
 
All sign-ups should be done by Friday 6/10.  Students will perform all 4 major scales and arpeggios listed above by memory, Ultimate Warm-up by memory, and will also sight-read for the audition.

Students are currently working on God Bless America, all of Patriotic Parade Sequence, and The Star Spangled Banner.
 
Practice should include these tunes as well as Long Tones and Warm-Up Sets 1-3, Major Scales, and any other appropriate sight-reading or other literature.
 
Our next performance is Monday, 5/30 for the Weehawken Memorial Day Parade.  Itinerary is attached below.

Students should be warming up with the following exercises daily:
 
Long Tones 1-3, Warm up Sets 1, 2, & 3, All Major Scales, Chorales 1-6, and rhythm studies.  They are currently sight-reading in class to start selecting music for the upcoming spring concert.
 
Students also have a new Star Spangled Banner, Phantom of the Opera Medley, and Mars from the Planets sheet music to work on and they should be reviewing the closer and openers from the marching band show to ensure memorization and precision in their performance for the upcoming District Music Concert on 5/19.

Students are currently developing their Major Scales and rhythm skills in 6/8, 12/8, and Cut Time meter.  They are also working on developing march style technique through articulating in a specific style as they play.
 
Students should be warming up with the following exercises daily:
 
Long Tones 1-3, Warm up Sets 1 & 2, Any Major Scales, Chorales 1-6, and rhythm studies.  Their performance music includes the Galway Piper and Disney's Magical Marches.
 
St. Patrick's Day parades are around the corner---all students are expected to attend.  The dates are Sunday, March 13 and Sunday, March 20th.  Itineraries will be posted outside the music room and on Remind.com.
 
PARADE REHEARSAL is WEDNESDAY, 3/9 from 3:00-4:30.  Please wear sneakers and comfortable clothes to march in.
 
Disney Medical, Permission, and Rules/Regulations forms are due no later than Friday, March 11th.

Students are working on a unit of learning to count/clap and play music in 6/8 and 3/8 meter.  They should be working daily on warmups including long tones, Major scales, lip slurs and scale/technique/articulation exercises as well as assigned warm-up chorales.  
 
They have Three Pieces by Schumann and The Wizard of Oz Highlights, both of which include 6/8 meter music.  They will begin mixed meter of 6/8, Cut Time, and 12/8 the first week of Marking Period 2.
 
Quarterly assessment will be on Concert F, B-flat, E-flat, and A-flat major scales, memorized, played in quarter-eighth rhythm.
 
Practice records are due at the first class of each week.

Students are learning about Cut Time (Alla Breve) this week and are applying it to learning Sleigh Ride and a section of Highlights from The Wizard of Oz, which is written in Cut Time.  Their homework is working on counting cut time rhythms and their music, which includes technical exercises and Major Scales from their method books. 
 
Jazz Band auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday, January 12 and 13.  Sign-ups are posted in the music room.
 
Disney Payment of $175 is due Friday, January 8th.  Please put cash payments in an envelope with student name and make sure also that student names are on the memo lines for any check payments.

Students are currently working on learning key signatures and major scales in those keys.  They should also be working daily on technique exercises in their book (Long Tones 1-3, Warm up Sets 1 & 2, all options, and Chorales in Concert B-flat Major).
 
Students should hand in practice records weekly for a grade.

Students are currently working on new music as well as Long Tones 1 and 3, and Warm-up Sets 1 & 2 in their method books.  This material is assigned to them to work on technique, articulation, and scale patterns.
 
Students are being taught the Flat and Sharps on the Piano as well as Key Signatures, Order of Sharps, and Order of Flats.  This material is relevant to their performance and students should study this material at home for upcoming assignments and tests.
 
Practice Records are due at the beginning of each week.

Tree Lighting Ceremony, Sunday, Dec. 6th.  Report to school by 5:00 to load truck with equipment, stands, etc.  
 
Students should dress in all black and prepare for cold weather.
 
All students should work on Long Tones 1A-1D, 3A, 3B, and Warm-up Sets 1 & 2, All options, and Chorales 1 & 2 in their daily practice.  They should also spend time on their performance music for the Tree Lighting Ceremony.

AFTER SCHOOL REHEARSAL, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1st from 3:15-4:15.  This is our chance to combine both high school band classes in order to prepare for the Sunday, December 6th Tree Lighting Ceremony.
 
 
 
All students should be working on the following in daily home practice:
 
-Foundations Books, Long Tones 1-3 (all), Warm up Sets 1 & 2 (all options)
-Holiday music given out in class
-Any music theory assignments/review given in class

--Please bring all UNIFORM JACKETS in FRIDAY so I can send out to have cleaned.
 
--We are currently transitioning from Marching Band into a classroom ensemble setting.  Be sure to bring the following materials to class DAILY:  Binder with sheet protectors, Pencil, All Music, including Warm-Up Books Issued by the school.
 
--Any missing performance grades must be made-up this week through a performance jury---You are required to schedule this in advance with Mrs. Kerr for lunch time or after school Thursday or Friday.
